DEATH HUMS features poetry and color visual art, including a full-color cover image, as well as a short selection of theory or criticism.
submissions are rolling and always open. following publication of issue 2, regular issues of DEATH HUMS will be published online, with print issues once annually. additional, themed print issues will be announced irregularly.
we are looking for work that is both smart and fresh. to get an idea of what we are looking for, check out who has appeared in past issues and been featured at our reading series. please email [email protected]

all work must be previously unpublished.
simultaneous submissions are fine, but notify us if your work is published elsewhere.
all submissions should include a short bio.
poetry and criticism should be submitted through our submissions manager.
guidelines by genre
poetry: submit 1-5 pages of poetry as a pdf or word doc through submittable.
visual art: send us 1-3 images, sized to 8.5×11 or smaller, as a jpeg or pdf to [email protected]
theory/criticism: submit 1 essay of up to 5 pages pertaining to contemporary poetry, contemporary art, or critical theory. we are especially interested in critical theory that relates to visual culture and popular culture. essays should be single spaced and sent as a pdf or word doc.
you retain all rights to your work.
poets selected for publication will be eligible to participate in our reading series at Webster Hall in New York City or at one of our satellite readings in Seattle or San Francisco.
